Robin's Bisexuality Gets Approval of DC Comics Creator's Granddaughter

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Batman: Urban Legends #6!

Batman's third Robin, Tim Drake, just came out as bisexual and the move just earned the approval of the grandaughter of DC Comics' founder! Tim Drake's move made enormous waves all over the internet after Batman: Urban Legends #6 was released. Naturally, this is big because no other version of Robin has ever come out as queer. However, as it's been stated, this shouldn't come as a huge shock to hardcore comic book fans who have followed Tim's journey over the years.

It's been speculated for a long time that Tim Drake's close friendship with Conner Kent was more than just a friendly bond. It was actually confirmed by creators that there was more to their dynamic. However, it was never outright shown in the comics, only suggested. And despite having a girlfriend, Stephanie Brown aka Spoiler, for a long period of time, it's clear that Tim needed to realize his true self. This has been a big chunk of his three-part story in Batman: Urban Legends.

With Tim Drake accepting a date at the end of this issue with his friend Bernard Dow, DC Comics has finally confirmed that Tim Drake is bisexual. Naturally, it's a huge deal, especially for DC’s LGBTQIA+ readers. This comes on the heels of DC celebrating its LGBTQIA+ characters and Pride month in a huge way with DC Pride #1. Now, DC Comics’ original creator’s granddaughter, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, via TMZ, has come forward to give her support towards this move.

Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson is credited with being DC’s original creator. Although his granddaughter doesn’t have any part of the publisher’s current state of comics, it’s great to see her showing support given her relation to DC Comics. Dana believes that normalizing LGBTQIA+ heroes is a good step towards great acceptance among comic book readers. Additionally, Dana hopes that more queer characters will be introduced in all forms of media as they have the power to affect people’s perspectives. She fully supports Tim Drake's coming out.

Tim Drake coming out as bisexual and going on a date with a man isn’t that unexpected to most regular readers. However, it could be quite a surprise to those who don't avidly follow characters like Robin, week to week. But it’s clear, with this, that superheroes coming out is incredibly important. Even non-comic book readers were drawn into conversations around Robin coming out as bisexual. It’s important to draw attention to these vital moments as it brings issues of LGBTQIA+ representation into the forefront of people’s minds. There’s no doubt that many more iconic heroes will come out after taking the time to reflect on their identities. Tim Drake is just one cog in the puzzle as comics naturally shift to a world more representative of reality and it's great to see Dana Wheeler-Nicholson voicing her support.
