Marvel Just Gave Part of Canada To An X-Men Supervillain

Spoilers for "Born in the Uszorsusr" in Deadpool: Black, White and Blood #1 ahead!

Marvel has just given a part of Canada to Omega Red, an X-Men supervillain. In the first issue of Deadpool: Black, White and Blood, the Merc with a Mouth gets an unusual invite from Omega Red and discovers the Cold War relic has started his own “utopia” in the middle of the wilderness. The issue is on sale now in print and digital.

Created by Jim Lee and John Byrne, Omega Red first appeared in 1992’s X-Men #4. A mutant, Omega Red has the ability to create pheromones that can kill someone within minutes. In addition, the Soviet government experimented on Omega Red, giving him tendril implants that he can use as weapons. This was all on top of his superhuman strength and stamina as well as his ability to absorb the life force of others. When the Soviet Union fell in the early 1990s, Omega Red was mothballed and put into cryogenic sleep. He was later revived and has gone on to menace the X-Men many times. While Omega Red may be a cold-blooded killer in the mainstream Marvel Universe, he is a misguided ruler in the out of continuity story “Born in the Uszorsusr” by James Stokoe, appearing in Deadpool: Black, White and Blood #1.

The story opens with Deadpool receiving an invite from Omega Red to come visit. Deadpool arrives and discovers that Omega Red has carved out his own second-rate “country” in the wilds of Canada. Omega Red gives Deadpool a tour and Deadpool rolls with it. The festivities are soon crashed by Ursa Major. Omega Red reveals he invited Ursa Major to his city, but Major decided to overthrow him, igniting a civil war. Deadpool learns the real point of contention is the country’s flag—the two sides cannot agree on what it should be. The irony is: the flags are the same: both are simply solid red flags. Deadpool solves the problem by bringing out his own solid red flag, claiming it to be a hybrid of the other two. This works for everyone, at least until Alpha Flight arrive. They bring with them a Canadian flag, which triggers a nuclear war, eliminating Omega Red’s “country.”

Omega Red is many things: super-soldier, mutant, cold-blooded killer, and Cold War relic. Being a leader is new ground for him, and he is not doing well. He has already lost control, only two weeks in, and all over a flag. This portrayal of Omega Red as a dense buffoon who strong arms his way into leadership is obviously out of continuity, but it still makes for a funny story.

An X-Men supervillain like Omega Red may not be readers’ first choice for ruler of a new country in Canada, but in Deadpool: Black, White and Blood #1, he gets a place to call his own - at least for a little while.
