Guardians of the Galaxy's Gamora & Drax Designs Explained By Developer

Developer Eidos-Montréal explains the unique designs for Gamora and Drax that players will see in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. The intergalactic superhero adventure, announced back at E3 2021, is based on the titular team of Marvel Comics misfits. The Guardians of the Galaxy have been around since 1969, but they were first introduced to mainstream audiences in the 2014 live-action film adaptation.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is anticipated by fans of Marvel's team of outer space outlaws, particularly due to the single-player game's focus on narrative. Rather than multiple players controlling each member of the Guardians, Eidos-Montréal's game will have one player in control of their leader Star-Lord. The swashbuckling space pirate fights like the protagonist of many third-person shooters, but with some sci-fi additions such as jet boots and elemental pistols The other members of the Guardians will also join Star-Lord in battle, however, and players can issue commands in order to set up devastating combos. A role-playing mechanic will also be present, allowing the player to make decisions which will improve or damage their relationship with their teammates. Guardians of the Galaxy emphasizes humor and dialogue, with the relationship between the various Guardians being a point of focus for Eidos-Montréal.

Bruno Gauthier-Leblanc, art director of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, recently provided some insights into the designs of Drax and Gamora. Both characters are similar to their comic book and film counterparts, but there are some notable new additions. Drax's iconic tattoos represent his warrior spirit, as each circular tattoo represents a victory in battle. Gamora's status as the most dangerous woman in the universe is illustrated by her character design, as the Zen-Whoberis assassin possesses knuckle dusters on her hands and feet.

Eidos-Montréal's focus on crafting a single-player narrative has allowed the developer to add an abundance of detail into Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. However, rumors suggest that the game may have once possessed a multiplayer mode similar to Marvel's Avengers. The fellow Marvel superhero title, developed by Crystal Dynamics and released back in September 2020, allows a group of four players to team up and assemble Earth's Mightiest Heroes. However, Marvel's Avengers has been criticized for a lack of polish and the inclusion of microtransactions, which may have motivated the purely single-player experience in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

Eidos-Montréal seems to have put a great deal of care into the development of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. The game appears to blend the most popular aspects of the Marvel team by including intense battles, fun interactions between characters, and a huge playlist of popular 80s hits. The thoughtful design decisions behind Drax and Gamora also demonstrate a keen understanding of, and fresh take on, these iconic characters.
