The Last Of Us Deepfake Puts Pedro Pascal & Bella Ramsey In the Game

A deepfake has given The Last of Us fans another look at what Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey might look like in the upcoming HBO show based on the game. Although not much is known about what parts of The Last of Us the show will cover, the series has given players plenty of information on which to make informed guesses. For one, Neil Druckmann, the original writer of both games, has confirmed via Twitter that Tess, Marlene, and Maria will be appearing. Given the fates of some of these characters, it seems safe to assume that the show will either take place before the first game or feature some flashbacks.

One reason it’s difficult to say for sure when the game takes place is the casting of Bella Ramsey as The Last of Us character Ellie. Alongside Pedro Pascal as Joel, Ramsey is 17 years old but looks much younger, as evidenced by her performance as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones. This means that she could just as easily be playing Ellie in the first game, who is 14 at the time, or in the second game, which takes place five years later. Pedro Pascal, on the other hand, has a little more leeway, as Joel is somewhere around his mid-50s during both games.

The deepfake, from Youtuber stryder HD, imprints both actors’ faces onto their counterparts in a few of the first game’s cutscenes. However, those excited for the show who haven’t played the game should note that this includes cutscenes from the end of the game, containing spoilers. Interestingly, Ellie’s face looks virtually unchanged in many of the scenes selected, which underlines how great of a casting decision HBO has made for The Last of Us's TV adaptation. Pascal, on the other hand, is still very recognizable. Fortunately, his acting prowess in The Mandalorian all but guarantees that he will effortlessly blend into the role.

This is not the first time fans have had a look at these two actors as Joel and Ellie. Since the casting announcement was made months ago, hundreds of fan images have flooded the internet showing what the pair might look like in the show. However, this deepfake is perhaps the most in-depth and realistic look at what fans can expect. Although certain scenes do tip-toe into uncanny valley territory, this video also reiterates how fantastic The Last of Us looked when it first released on the PlayStation 3. Once it was remastered on the PlayStation 4, it was virtually impossible to tell that the game was originally made for the previous console generation.

There’s little more we know about the show at this time. Over the course of both games, Naughty Dog has left a significant amount of room for additional storytelling, including the 20 years between the first game’s opening and main story and the five years preceding The Last of Us Part II. Luckily, between Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, creator of the Chernobyl miniseries, fans of the series can rest easy knowing that their beloved characters are in capable hands.
