The X-Men Are About To Face The Ultimate Sentinel | Screen Rant

The X-Men are about to take on Nimrod, the ultimate Sentinel. Jonathan Hickman's X-Men relaunch has entered its latest phase, the "Reign of X" - a time when the mutant race stands with confidence, more united than ever before on the living island of Krakoa.

But it's long been clear "Reign of X" will force the X-Men to confront threats greater than any they've encountered before. The X-Men have unleashed a mutant nightmare, another living island called Arakko, inhabited by millions of brutal warrior mutants. Humanity was already reluctant to accept Krakoa's sovereignty - the United Nations had to be given a telepathic nudge by Emma Frost in order to formally recognize Krakoa - and it's reasonable to assume the sudden appearance of Arakko and its citizens will raise tensions between humanity and mutantkind to levels never seen before. And then, looming over all this, there has been the promise of the return of Nimrod, the most dangerous Sentinel of all.

Marvel Comics has confirmed Nimrod will return to the X-Men comics in May, revealing a stunning cover for X-Men #19 along with the following teaser:

"The mastermind behind the current X-Man era, writer Jonathan Hickman continues to evolve the X-Men mythology in the pages of X-MEN along with artist Francesco Mobili. After taking on the Children of the Vault in March’s X-MEN #19, the future of Krakoa is at stake when one of the mutantkind’s greatest threats emerges. Don’t miss the startling return of Nimrod!"

Nimrod may well usher in the darkest period in mutant history. Hickman's Powers of X revealed the greatest secret of mutantkind, one only known to a handful - and that's thanks to Moira MacTaggert, a reincarnating mutant. In every timeline Moira has experienced, the development of a Nimrod Sentinel spells the doom of mutantkind. Fortunately, Nimrod's general state of disrepair suggests this is a time traveling Sentinel, equivalent to the version encountered by the X-Men years ago. The combined power of all Krakoa's mutants - including various Omega levels - should be sufficient to handle one Nimrod. But they will need to ensure every trace of the technological terror is destroyed.

The stakes are higher than they've ever been before for the X-Men. No longer are they fighting to protect a world that hates and fears them; now they are battling to preserve their own mutant society. But by gathering all the mutants in the world on two islands, the X-Men have unwittingly offered those who would destroy them a tantalizing target. Will the arrival of Nimrod lead to the X-Men's ultimate defeat?
