A new behind-the-scenes clip for Doom Patrol season 2 shows actress Abigail Shapiro transforming into the character of Dorothy. Dorothy became a central character on the acclaimed DC series in its second season, which premiered on both DC Universe and HBO Max. A third season has officially been ordered, which will air exclusively on HBO Max in keeping with the plan for all former DC Universe content.
Doom Patrol tells the story of a superhero team who battle mental health issues and personal trauma as often as they battle supervillains. The squad, pulled from the comics of the same name, is comprised of Robotman (Brendan Fraser), Elasti-Girl (April Bowlby), Jane (Diane Guerrero and others), Negative Man (Matt Bomer), and Cyborg (Joivan Wade). They are led by the Chief (Timothy Dalton), whose daughter, Dorothy, enters at the end of season 1. The show has been praised for its nuanced, emotionally complex characters and storylines.
In an exclusive new clip provided to Screen Rant, fans can see the behind-the-scenes makeup process for turning Shapiro into Dorothy. The heroes of Doom Patrol have some striking looks, and this video gives a little glimpse behind the curtain at the artists and specialists who make them come to life. Watch the clip below:
Though both seasons have received intense critical praise and warm receptions from fans, Doom Patrol hasn’t exactly caught fire in the way some of its contemporaries have. Netflix’s Umbrella Academy, for instance is similar in many ways – from the dark superhero aesthetic to the dysfunctional family working through trauma, to the eccentric old man who brought them all together – and has become a wild success. Doom Patrol’s lesser notoriety is largely due to the smaller exposure of DC Universe. With luck, many more people will discover the show now that it has a permanent home on HBO Max.
DC shows like Doom Patrol and Titans are a big part of HBO Max’s future plans, as Warner Bros. attempts to build up franchise depth to compete with Disney’s various Marvel and Star Wars properties. The DC Universe shows will provide something of a foundation on which to build new original content, and if Doom Patrol is any indication of what’s to come, fans can look forward to more quality series going forward.
Doom Patrol: The Complete Second Season is also available on January 26 on Blu-ray and DVD.
